About the Disability Commission

Established through by MGL c. 40, § 8J and the City's administrative code, the Disability Commission comprises nine members, with a majority being individuals with disabilities. One member represents the immediate family of a person with a disability, and one member is an elected official. The Commission is staffed by the City's ADA Coordinator, located in the Office of Planning & Sustainability, and serves as an advisory body to the City.

Authorities and Responsibilities

The Commission addresses local issues affecting people with disabilities, advises municipal officials on compliance with state and federal laws, coordinates programs with the Massachusetts Office on Disability, and reviews City policies, services, and facilities for accessibility. It provides information, referrals, and technical assistance, and coordinates with local groups with similar goals. The Commission elects officers annually during its first meeting of the year.

On October 2, 2020, Mayor David J. Narkewicz approved the ADA Self-Evaluation & Transition Plan and Section 504 Plan, developed with input from the Disability Commission. This plan reaffirms the City's commitment to equal access and will support future MOD grants. On March 21, 2024, the City Council passed a resolution in support of the transition plan.
