White Pine Health Issues
White pines are one of the most common trees on City of Northampton watershed land. For this reason, Public Works is keeping a close eye on their health.
In recent years, white pines throughout the region have exhibited signs of distress as seen in thinning crowns and browning needles, which are shed earlier than expected. On watershed land, many of these trees are located in stands that are overcrowded. To alleviate the stress caused by overcrowding and disease, some of these areas were thinned in 2017 and 2018. The intent of thinning is to improve the overall health of these stands. It will take several years to see the impact of thinning.
