Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Levee Certification

  • Engineering evaluation to establish capital improvement priorities
  • Accreditation that the flood control system meets FEMA requirements for flood protection for updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) under development by FEMA
  • Project awarded to GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
  • Multi-year project
  • Phase 1 complete and supported by $315,000 state Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) grant
  • Phase 2 underway and anticipated to be complete in Summer 2022

Flood Control Vegetation Management

  • Miscellaneous mechanical vegetation management on the flood control structures to maintain the levees in conformance with US Army Corps of Engineers requirements

Hockanum Road Flood Control Pump Station

  • Phase 1 facility improvements
  • Work includes electrical system upgrades, removal of existing underground fuel storage tanks and replacement with above ground storage tanks and miscellaneous building improvements

  • Contract awarded to Bay State Regional Contractors, Inc.
  • Construction ongoing through 2022 and Spring 2023

Interstate 91 - Bridges Over US Route 5, B&M Railroad and Hockanum Road

  • Bridge and roadway improvements at Exit 23 (formerly Exit 18)
  • MassDOT project #606552
  • Work includes bridge replacement as noted and roadway & sidewalk improvements at Exit 23 where it meets US Route 5 (Mount Tom Road)
  • Project awarded to J.F. White Contracting Co.
  • Construction began in Summer 2021 and will take several years to complete

Leonard Street Realignment

  • Roadway construction to reconfigure the intersection of Leonard Street and Haydenville Road (Route 9) to a right angle

Main Street Redesign

  • Redesign of Main Street from Market/Hawley Streets to West Street
  • MassDOT project #609286
  • Proposed safety and infrastructure improvements including: travel lane realignment, parking reconfiguration, dedicated bike lanes, expanded sidewalks, new traffic signals, stormwater improvements, landscaping, amenities and water and sewer main replacement
  • Primary design by Toole Design; water and sewer design by Tata & Howard
  • Pre-25% public engagement and design considerations are available here: https://arcg.is/0KC90T0
  • 25% design was submitted to MassDOT for review in January 2022
  • 25% Design Public Hearing anticipated in Fall 2022
  • Currently scheduled for bidding on the 2025 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), supported by federal and state funding
  • Water and sewer design and replacement funded by City's Sewer and Water Enterprises

  • City wide pavement markings including center lines, edge lines, stop lines, crosswalks, symbols, speed humps and enhanced rail trail crossings

  • Markings are anticipated to be completed by late Fall 2022
