New Fees Coming April 13, 2026!

On April 13th, the Building Department will be implementing new commercial building permit fees (PDF), residential electrical permit fees (PDF), plumbing and gasfitting fees (PDF), and one and two-family building permit fees (PDF).

Materials may be mailed, emailed, or put in the grey free-standing box outside our door.

WE DO NOT DO ONLINE PERMITTING AT THIS TIME.

Functions

The Building Department is charged with enforcing the state building code, plumbing and gas code, electrical code, and the architectural access code. We respond to citizen complaints and address concerns about the safety, accessibility and security of construction of their homes and businesses. The building commissioner is the enforcement officer for the city's zoning bylaws.

Service Area

The Office of the Building Commissioner has jurisdiction over Northampton, including the villages of Florence and Leeds.
